Flexible home for a growing family
39 Parkholme Road, a Victorian terraced house, is situated within the Graham Road and Mapledene conservation area. It has been restored and remodeled to create a well-designed, simply expressed and flexible home for the changing needs of a growing family. via

The brief was to create a dwelling with a high level of both design and sustainability. A palette of natural materials including copper, limestone and Douglas fir was chosen to reinforce the crafted aesthetic. Insulation, passive solar heating and grey water recycling help achieve a level of sustainability comparable to that of a new build home under 2010 Building Regulations.

The rear of the house was redesigned to incorporate a terrace, kitchen and dining space connecting the west-facing garden to the existing house. The simple box form of the extension clearly defines the new addition from the original building. The project, recently on view as part of Open House is a demonstration of the viability of combining sustainability with good design, a reflection of the principles of Macdonald Wright Architects.
